Access to what? What limitations?

LIMITED ACCESS sounds like a disappointing title for a project, but in fact it’s not really true, it has a kind of ambiguity within it, which is a characteristic of Parkingallery projects. One should ask : “Access to what?” and “What limitations?”
In the past decade, Iranian Contemporary art and specially New Media Arts has been through many ups and downs, either in the time which was temporarily celebrated by the authorities and officials, by a considerable budget and space, without necessarily establishing a constant and appropriate structure for its survival in future, or when it visibly slowed down its development at least outside of the unofficial and private circles of artists in the recent years. And as we speak the numbers of curators and art lovers who are frequently visiting Tehran, for various reasons and intentions is highly increasing, specially now when the international Media zoomed more than ever, on Iran. The Art Market despite recent hiccups is heating up by its discoveries of middle eastern and Iranian art shows from LA to Dubai, filled with repetitive names of superstars. Meanwhile there is an independent creative scene which is emerging and is undoubtedly hard to track and describe, as its vibrancy and its continuity lies in its anonymity. In the absence of  an inclusive reference for a proper research on multi fragmented Tehran art scene, most of the attempts which has been done to map and document the scene, remained unfinished and to some degree clueless because of the intentional shifts toward the art market and/or falling into the traps of tribal self promotional concerns of few.

LIMITED ACCESS therefore tries to gather and reconnect the artists from all disciplines to each other and reestablish their link with their emerging audience. As we believe that what is labeled and being marketed as “Iranian contemporary art” to the art world is quite known and accessible despite all propaganda, as many individuals and collectives are paying their dues for its exposure and growth internationally, even by conflicting objectives and means. What is really missing here is a local platform, which though its structure, experiments in New Media can be seen and discussed , beyond the closed circle of the artists practicing it.
As delayed echos  of such phenomenon, often passing through mediums like Internet, books and other medias might turn the viewer into a passive consumer rather than a critical observer.

These limitations could be caused by many factors, from the imposed sanctions to unofficial boycotts, to the emergence of market-oriented attitude among artists as a result of periodic temporary reception of Iranian art all around the world, beside as some other may put it, the fact that contemporary art is being rarely mentioned in the mainstream media, ignored to some extent and not supported any more.  All these excuses are not enough to prevent us from taking the current moment for granted even if it would seem hopeless to many, and shape the future by observing and learning from it.

SAM KESHMIRI has made us so excited by his Beautiful poster for LIMITED ACCESS II, and we are waiting for more surprises as he accepted to design the 1st Parkingallery’s CD which is a selection of experimental audio works from tehran and elsewhere,  he is an illustrator, desinger and he’s busy with numerous projects from websites to tee shirts and ….
like the poster for previous edition of limited access (2007), this is a repeating poster as well sized 50×70, and in order to be adjustable for small space VS big walls, an sticker has been designed to be placed on it freely so the result may  vary from A3 to 100×70 or even bigger!

Sleepy an installation by Farid Jafari Samarghandi

SLEEPY an Installation by Farid Jaffari Samarghandi opens tomorrow at Azad Art gallery, Jaffari (Tehran/1980) has shown his videos works extensively in Tehran in number of Solo shows as well as abroad, originally studied fine art at Soureh University,Tehran, with focus of painting, started experimenting with video around 1998-1999. and beside his own practice has been generously contributing to the new wave of video art in Iran, collaborating with numerous artists on their video works…

This time he takes us to a journey of another kind by his multimedia installation, this is how Hamed Sahihi describes it:

Sleeping is a significant part of our life without a doubt, and there is no wonder that it has an outlined presence in a large number of Art history pages specially the ones which refer to the beginning of the 20th century. It’s an experience much closer to temporary death, other than living, making almost one/third of life disappear in an unknown, dark and speechless tunnel. Some often recall the time we spend asleep, with such murky words; also a number of artists who have been inspired and worked on “sleeping” as their theme, did the same.

Sleeping is such a mysterious journey; it rarely happens that an artist bases his works on such a topic, taking the act of sleeping as a ordinary human activity. And here is where exactly Farid Jafari Samarghandi’s “Sleepy” series differs from the rest, as he changes his point of view from someone who is sleeping, to an observer which looks at his sleeping subjects – mainly chosen from the members of his family and close friends – capturing intimate moments in an unusual place and time: having a short nap on a sofa or resting in the afternoon with just a pillow lying on the living room’s carpet. This often appears as a station between two states of being awake, in a way it resembles (sleeping as ) a natural and necessary phenomenon rather than a melancholic-schizophrenic trip. Dealing the subject in a parallel experience of pleasure and anxiety, peeping someone sleeping can be threatening and scary from the sleeping person’s point of view and in the other hand watching a living person with its gentle movements might make the observer unable to track its liveliness and terrified his/her sleeping fellow might be dead. Therefore the clever choice of the medium – photography and video – makes the journey more attractive – photographs of standstill subjects beside moving images in the course of time.

Artist Statement .

The images used in Media and advertisements are often edited to obscure reality and to cover up the surroundings and circumstances.
As if the world around us is fitted in to a frame , where by we are supposed to  believe that this is all that there  is and “ Everything Is Just Fine “.
By putting these images next to each other and using the mind frame  of the producers  , I have attempted to  refer the viewer to observe  “ All “ of the reality. Allowing the  observer to  judge and form  their own interpretation away from the pre conceived notions .
The direct and indirect presence of women in these series is an example of how we can look at the reality. Women who have refused to sit in the back rooms and have pushed the boundaries of the society have appeared  in all sorts of places and taken  up tasks that have traditionally been the domain of the male population. They have insisted on truth and by persistence have changed the way media had ignored them and now in fact have turned the media focus on their activities. 
In a way I attempt to remedy the situation by demonstrating that the images we are fed are not reflections of reality , but  are manipulations that finally fail to convince the viewer .
In other words I have applied the same technique or recipe to  question these practices and to draw attention to hidden codes and dialogues that are the underlying reason for this wide mis-representations of truth.  I have tried to find a way out of these “ virtual borders “ and to insist on “ All “ of the reality.

Featuring the work of eight artists living in Tehran, Iran – Nima Alizadeh, Saba Alizadeh, Mohammad Ghazali, Ghazaleh Hedayat, Abbas Kowsari, Mehran Mohajer, Neda Razavipour, and Homayoun Sirizi – alongside new work by San Francisco-based artist Taraneh Hemami, this exhibition compiles a collective narrative of everyday Tehran, the largest city in the Middle East and the 16th most populated city in the world with close to 8 million residents.  Representing the current unpredictability of each day in Tehran and also the hope that comes from imagining a better future, the artists chronicle narratives of place and time, demystifying life in a country that has been misunderstood and maligned for decades.
